We provided details of our Wai Yin services, our particular health and social care model, and how it has impacted on the community based services provided in Manchester.  We also shared insights, knowledge and discussions about the differences in health care and nursing systems between Hong Kong and England.   They all enjoyed the study visit, learning […]

Older carers: invisible and undervalued

Older informal carers are usually people over retirement age who are looking after a partner or disabled child.  We have found at the Wai Yin Society that older Chinese carers need more support. Although many find caring a rewarding and loving expression of their relationship with the care recipient, they also tell us that they feel invisible and undervalued. Older carers often receive no financial support, or do so only after going through a very complicated system. The […]

Innovative Help for the Homeless

We were delighted to host a group of students from the Manchester School of Architecture, in an exciting partnership,  for several months at our Welcome Community Centre in Cheetham Hill.  Our aim was to come up with some innovative solutions to the homeless problem in Greater Manchester.  One solution was a very low cost housing pod made from recycled materials that can comfortably sleep one person. Another was an IKEA style design manual to enable construction of, again, very low cost buildings for the homeless to use. We would like to congratulate the students on pushing forward the boundaries, and […]
