Active Citizens

The overall aim of the Active Citizens Project is to encourage economically inactive people from Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) communities living in Manchester to become volunteers, so as to promote Active Citizenship to the community.

A number of project elements will be delivered, namely: an activity programme for over the over 50’s cohort; volunteer working with elderly service users; a transferable skills development element incorporating Information, Advice and Guidance (IAG); vocational development and an active citizenship programme, incorporating the following themes:

  • ESOL (English) and all about Manchester.
  • Help towards Employment: CV, Advice, Job Search. Food Hygiene, Healthy Eating, Cooking.
  • First Aid and ways to Fitness and Well Being, including Tai Chi, Dancing and Art.
  • Volunteering in Health and Social Care, giving advice, mentoring, or make your own practical project.

Short courses, activities and workshops incorporating the themes will be conducted and people from all communities, not just the Chinese community, are welcome to take part. It is hoped that most participants will progress on to volunteering for Wai Yin or other organisations, and/or enrol in programmes that lead to a recognised basic skills or vocational qualification.
