Wai Yin Society is a delivery partner of the Motiv8 programme, providing holistic support to empower and support Motiv8 participants. This includes IT classes, work club support, money and debt advice, ESOL courses and befriending, lunch and leisure classes. Motiv8 transforms people’s lives by helping them overcome the challenges and barriers they face to get back on track. By improving people’s wellbeing, confidence and employability skills, we increase people’s chances of accessing training or finding a job. Chinese Community Centres in the UK: Challenges and Strategies for the Future

In January 2018, the Chinese Welfare Trust commissioned a piece of research entitled “Chinese Community Centres in the UK: Changing Landscape, Challenges and Strategies for the Future”. The final research report was launched in September 2018. It aims to document the changes and coping mechanisms experienced by Chinese community organisations in the last ten years, based on information gathered from key informants from 14 Chinese community organisations in four major UK cities – London, Manchester, Birmingham and Liverpool. Citizenship Preparation Courses 2019

Carols in the City

It was my pleasure to attend the annual Christmas Carols in the City concert last night in support of the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital Charity. It was good too to meet up with a few friendly familiar faces! I wish you all a Merry Christmas, and a Happy New Year 2019. 

Somme 100 Memorial in Heaton Park

Yesterday, I was honoured to attend an unveiling of a permanent memorial and commemorate the Somme in Heaton Park.  It was a moving ceremony with a performance by Feelgood Theatre and the Halle community choir to remember both those known and unknown who died in the battle there, and whom will never be forgotten. Thank you for inviting me to this special event.   

Visit of Nursing Students from Chinese University of Hong Kong

We recently welcomed a group of nursing students from the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) to our Wai Yin Society Sheung Lok Centre.  Thank you to Dr Gayatri-Nambiar-Greenwood, Senior Lecturer, at Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU) who arranged the visit on Monday 12th November 2018. We provided details of our Wai Yin services, our particular health and social care model, and how it has impacted on the community based services provided in Manchester.  We also shared insights, knowledge and discussions about the differences in health care and nursing systems between Hong Kong and England.   They all enjoyed the study visit, learning […]

Women’s Vote Centenary Celebration

Visit of the Chinese Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security

We were delighted to welcome a visit of the Chinese Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security, to the North West Employers, and to our Wai Yin Society, on 6th November 2018. The delegation attended our Sheung Lok Wellbeing Centre in Ardwick, Manchester, in order to study our integrated work with local authorities and health providers.  It was an enjoyable time of learning, connecting and sharing. 

Volunteers’ Appreciation Lunch 2018

We recently took the opportunity to celebrate all the hard work and commitment of our wonderful volunteers  during the year.  Both the Lord Mayor of Manchester, Cllr June Hitchen,  and the new Consul General of the People’s Republic of China in Manchester, Zheng XiYuan, honoured us with their presence, to present certificates to more than 60 of our volunteers,  as a token of our appreciation.  Our volunteers are involved in a wide range of service activities at Wai Yin Society:  such as Tai Chi, Mandarin teaching, Dancing, the Be-friendly scheme, Sheung Lok radio programme, and Macmillan solutions supporting cancer patients.  Also […]

Spirit of Manchester Awards 2018

We were delighted to receive the Partnership and Collaboration Award, on behalf of and as a key partner, for the Maya Project. A collaborative approach to support Black, Asian, minority ethnic and refugee women and girls in Manchester, dealing with crisis, accessing help and support, developing aspirations and achieving dreams. A big thank you to the key workers at Wai Yin Society: Amy, Woon and Joanna and let’s not forget our unsung heroes, Connie, Lisa Ngan, Anita, Patrick, Ting, other project staff and volunteers who supported the project with home visits, activities and booking arrangement etc.   Note: The Spirit of Manchester Awards […]

Day Trip to Liverpool
