International Womens Day : Women of Possibilities

We are engaging in a number of activities this month to promote International Womens Day 2018. On Saturday, there will be a “walk for women” in the city centre. We are going to meet at the Chinatown arch at 1pm and from there, link up with the main procession outside central library. Thank You all Visitors, Volunteers and Staff at our Chinese New Year Stall

 A very big “thank you” to all the visitors who celebrated with us, and staff and volunteers who turned out on Sunday 18th February in Albert Square to assist with Manchester’s Chinese New Year of the Dog celebrations, which raised awareness of  Wai Yin Society’s services among the general public. This year’s festival was arguably the best ever! Vietnamese Academics Visit Wai Yin Society

Recently (23rd October) we were delighted to welcome a group of academic visitors from Vietnam to Wai Yin Society. They spent time with us learning about the UK’s system of, and our specific model of health and social care that we apply at our Sheung Lok Wellbeing Centre. China Women’s Delegation Visits Wai Yin Society

We were pleased to welcome a delegation of visitors from Jiangxi Provincial Women’s Federation, People’s Republic of China, to our offices on Friday 27th October. Universal Credit Training Session

We were delighted to welcome Chris Hulse, Partnership Manager, Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), to Wai Yin Society Head Quarters, on Wednesday 18th October, to deliver training on the new Universal Credit System. Our team of AQS accredited advice workers, other staff and volunteers (17 attended the training), listened to how the new online claim system will work, and how we might best help our clients understand and navigate the new system confidently, without unnecessary delays and difficulties. Annual Staff and Volunteer Appreciation Lunch 2017

Wai Yin Society recently celebrated the commitment and hard work of all staff and volunteers (including the Trustees) at the annual appreciation lunch on Friday 6th October 2017. More than ninety participants were in attendance including friends and family. Heart warming speeches were made, and certificates awarded to all our star volunteers. The event was a great success! We celebrated the hard work and achievements of all our staff, and especially volunteers without whom we could not survive and flourish. Manchester Half Marathon Fundraiser

I would like to inform you that Woon Cheng has raised £560 from running the Manchester Half Marathon on Sunday 15th October, and she completed it in 2hours and 30 minutes!   We would like to give her a big thanks for her fantastic effort, to raise money for Wai Yin Society, and also to prepare for this race event.   She is our STAR women runner.  Well Done!

Radio Sheung Lok -ALL FM – Bronze Award

I am delighted to announce that Radio Sheung Lok – ALL FM received the Bronze Award for Community Development Project of the year from the national Community Radio Awards on Saturday 23th September, which took place in Bristol, South West England. A panel of over 50 judges drawn from the BBC, commercial radio, community radio, other media and also academia selected the best programmes and stations from more than 350 entries from 70 community radio stations, and from every corner of the UK. Citizen’s Commendation

Wai Yin Society were absolutely delighted, and honoured, yesterday afternoon, to receive a Citizen’s Commendation from Greater Manchester Police. The award was for: “Dedicated and continuous support, playing an integral part in forging strong community links with residents of China Town and further afield. The Society has cemented an invaluable and professional relationship withthe police and partner agencies to alleviate barriers between them and the local communities.” I would personally like to thank our staff, volunteers and service users for their vital contribution, and look forward to further serving our local communities in this way.      

Breastfeeding Festival: Understanding Communities and Cultures

On Saturday 24th June, 2017, I was invited to speak on Chinese cultural awareness around pregnancy, labour and breastfeeding, at the Salford Royal Hospital annual breastfeeding Festival. The audience comprised a mixture of healthcare professionals – doctors, midwives, nurses, and healthcare visitors – as well as parents from the public. During the Question & Answer session, a specialist paediatric doctor asked for my advice on how to overcome barriers such as Chinese women not accessing peer support in the first month after childbirth, particularly if they do not leave the house. Wai Yin signs up to a Memorandum for social care and wellbeing

On Friday 12th May, I attended a very important meeting at Manchester’s Town Hall.  Here, I represented Wai Yin Society to sign up to a new Memorandum of Understanding, that sets out a framework for health and social care services to help and support the people of Greater Manchester by working alongside public bodies such as Primary Care Trusts. We are pleased to announce that Wai Yin Society received two awards at the Manchester BME Network awards ceremony, on Thursday 9 February 2017, to showcase and reward the work being done by members & supporters. Our Welcome Centre, on Cheetham Hill, won an award for the fantastic work being done, by staff and volunteers, for people in one of the most disadvantaged areas in the country.
