Statement by Wai Yin Society

In response to recent discussions on various social media platforms regarding the mission, directors, and staff of Wai Yin Society, in order to deepen public understanding of our organization, we hereby issue the following statement:

Introduction to Wai Yin Society

Wai Yin Society was founded in 1988 by a group of volunteers with a community consciousness and a commitment to women’s rights and development.  Over the past 35 years, we have rooted ourselves in the community, conducted independent fundraising, and received funding support from various sectors of the community and the government.  This has allowed us to extend our services from women to other ethnic minorities residing in Manchester, including Somalis, Pakistanis, Bangladeshis, Indians, and other European nationals.  We provide a range of services aimed at adapting to life, integrating into the community, assisting with employment, improving English language skills, and promoting mental and physical well-being.

Wai Yin Society is composed of a team of registered social workers, nurses, and other professionals, dedicated to providing appropriate and diverse services to individuals of different ages within the community, while also actively advocating for the challenge of all forms of discrimination and social exclusion.

We firmly believe that society should be characterized by equality, diversity, and mutual respect.  As our mission states, “To reach out and empower people, achieve better lives and create opportunities to overcome barriers”.

Therefore, under the principles and mission we uphold, Wai Yin Society:

  • Actively promotes and safeguards the dignity, quality of life, and rights of our service users, striving for better social development within the United Kingdom and globally. We operate independently of any political party or religious organization, bringing together various resources to seek a better society.
  • In pursuit of social progress and maintaining political and religious neutrality, we are willing to collaborate with numerous partner organizations and stakeholders across different sectors (including government agencies, businesses, academia, etc.) and volunteers to provide appropriate services to different communities in Greater Manchester, with an open-door policy for everyone.
  • Operates in accordance with relevant UK government regulations, such as charity regulations, tax ordinance, data protection ordinance, and other applicable provisions, in carrying out our services.

Through years of dedication and commitment to the community, Wai Yin Society has earned the trust of service recipients, funders, partners, stakeholders, and statutory bodies.  We have been nominated for and received various awards, recognizing the contributions of Wai Yin Society and its team members.
