Sally was born and lived in Indonesia until 1962, when her family emigrated to Brazil. She worked as a secretary for an English firm and finished her study at Sao Paulo University in Education in 1970. She moved to the Falkland Islands where she was married and helped the Baha'i community. When her husband finished his contract with Cable and Wireless, they had their first baby boy and returned to Brazil.
Sally worked as a secretary and her husband as an English teacher. They later decided to start a own small English school. In 1989 they moved to the UK in order that their four children could move into higher. In 1993, Sally’s husband sadly passed away, during which time Sally looked after her children. When her children had completed their studies at University of Salford and Coventry University, she started to work at Tesco’s. She has since retired.
She became a member of Wai Yin’s services in 1998 where she studied Mandarin. She attended a number of classes at different levels. In 2007, Bee Parker, who attended her Mandarin class, invited her to join the Management Committee. She thankfully accepted and registered her interest. She was appointed a member of the committee at the 19th Annual General Meeting, which was held in January 2008. She said she has seen how Wai Yin has been a very helpful and useful organization to the Chinese community, and she has a lot of admiration for the staff and the management who are very committed to their work. She has said “It is an honour to be a member of the Management Committee so that I can do good work for the community”.
Since her children’s graduation and her retirement, her children have moved across International borders. Prior to becoming a member of the Management Committee, Sally registered as a Foster Carer with Manchester City Council. She now looks after two children – a 17-year-old Vietnamese girl and a 16-year-old Angolan girl. She is very happy with her role as a Foster carer and encourages anyone to become a carer.
