Juanita Yau - Chairperson

Photo of Juanita YauMrs Juanita Yau has been involved with the Wai Yin Chinese Women Society since May 1989.  A mother of 2 children and a good, supportive husband, Juanita has been able to find time for Wai Yin. The driving force for Juanita as a dedicated and committed volunteer for Wai Yin is the satisfaction of being able to help others, especially to raise the profile of the Chinese Community.

Juanita came to the UK since 1978 first landing in Southampton. She was then moved to London, Cambridge and Manchester.  Her first degree was in Chemistry.  It was a part time day release studies and it took Juanita 5 years to complete her first degree.  Juanita was always working in Analytical Chemistry field before she moved to Manchester. She sees herself to be a very practical person and likes to do hand-on job. When Juanita first moved to Manchester, she obtained a Grant from the government to study a Master of Science (M.Sc) degree full time in UMIST (Now become University of Manchester).  It was her first full time student lives and she enjoyed her studies very much.

Luckily enough, Juanita got a job almost straight away after she finished her M.Sc studies.  Her current job title is known as Occupational Hygienist.  Because of her change of career, she has to study another degree before she became a professional and qualified Occupational Hygienist.  Combining studies, a mother of 2 and a volunteer for the Chinese Community, Juanita did find it hard but fulfilling. Occupational Hygiene job is very interesting involving scientific and academic skill to help preventing people’s occupational illness, such as help to set up a proper work station for computer work to reduce the risk of Musculoskeletal Disorder, evaluating and controlling chemical exposure. Juanita loves her job very much as the job gives her job satisfaction to help people and improve people working environment.

Likewise, Juanita loves to work as a volunteer for Wai Yin because it fulfils her dream to help people who are less fortunate than herself.  At the same time, Juanita finds that she can learn a lot from it.
