Connie Kam - Vice Chair
In the summer of 1994, Connie came to Manchester with her two daughters, aged 13 and 14. At that time, they were totally strangers without any knowledge about this city. Worst still, they had no acquaintances in Manchester at all; no friends or relatives whatsoever. What Connie could get was just the mental and financial support from her husband who was working in Hong Kong. Having to shoulder the burden of bringing up her two young daughters all by herself was really a big challenge. She felt the pressure and became depressed. Fortunately, Connie’s neighbour who learned of her plight told her to seek help from a voluntary organisation called the Wai Yin Chinese Women Society (WYCWS) in the China Town. Though it was just a small scale organisation with several staff, she knew that help was at hand. Later, she became a member of the society and subsequently one of the members of the Management Committee. Over the years, WYCWS has expanded dramatically and has become a household name within the Chinese community. Connie would like to use her personal experience of an immigrant; she may be able to offer assistance to people with similar problems.
